RAJUK Uttara Model College was set up on an area of about 4.5 acres (18,000 square-meter) at Uttara in 1994 under the direct control and management of the Ministry of Education. It was the absence of a truly standard educational institution in the area and the demand of the inhabitants that had led to the idea of founding an institution of very high standards in the newly built town. In order to meet the demand, the ministry of Education took necessary steps to establish an educational institution in Uttara. RAJdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Capital Development Authority) or RAJUK forwarded their helping hands by providing the much needed land for the school. The construction of the main academic building was completed in early 1994 and the college section was formally inaugurated in the Academic year 1994-1995 by the then Prime-Minister Khaleda Zia. Due to acute shortage of infrastructural facilities another development project for construction of a new Building was taken up in 1995 which was completed in two phases and the campus took its present shape in 2001.
The school is presently placed under the control of an autonomous board of governors headed by the secretary, ministry of education. It has already earned the reputation to be one of the best educational institutions of the country. Now all out efforts are being made to transform it into an institution of international status. Although the school commenced with only one shift (Morning Shift), later in 2003 another shift named Day Shift was launched according to the education expansion policy of the government in order to cope with the growing number of students. The 7:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. schedule is called Morning Shift and the 12:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. schedule is called Day Shift. The students of this institution are known as “The Rajukians”.
